LAND | GROUND | PARCELS
The parcel project is an extension of grandparent and parent projects Land and Ground. It explores notions of surface mapping, projection, subdivision and ownership by way of a constructed skin and screen. To be viewed from multiple perspectives both silent and bare, as well projected with the marks, processes and traces of humankind’s presence and its subsequent desire for ownership of something that is constantly shifting and evolving in geologic time.

Of all the landscapes explored, surveyed and inhabited; there exist countless iterations of those and many others imagined that only exist in the mind of the individual, ever having a dream of land. A great portion of this plant is owned; that is to say it has been surveyed by ever advancing means and subsequently delineated, parceled out, claimed, and sold… and so it goes on. All the while, this landscape, its surface and that beneath, changes and is otherwise in geologic time unstable. What becomes of its neurological reflection and its many derivatives curated by the imagination, is up to the maker.
The parcel project exploits the mental landscape and through physically constructed surfaces that refer to their imagined counterpart. In this current form, they ritualize the process of exploring and surveying surface as a way to highlight the process of exploration and the sense of the hunt; for land. The object, constructed of delicate rice paper, aided by the apparatus of its construction, exists as a surface and skin; stretched out and mounted by way of artificial sinew reminiscent of those processes used in the tanning of hides. This fresh surface, derived from the imagination exists as now as an objective “parcel” of the mental landscape and moves on in its journey as art object, image, and documented parcel.

INPUT
Primary Physical Materials
Rice Paper, Wood (poplar), Artificial Sinew, PVA Glue.
Theoretical and Conceptual Foundations
Landscape Theory, Surface Geology, Topology, Notions of Land Ownership, Surface Rights, Surveying, Remote Sensing and Surface as Skin and Screen upon which the cultural landscape is projected, moving and ephemeral.
SYSTEM (aka. Apparatus)
Materials
Rice Paper, Wood (poplar), Artificial Sinew, PVA Glue, framing lumber, plywood, chicken wire, plastic film, fishing line, video projection, equipment and hardware.
Method
Use imagined landscape as source to create a lightweight paper surface and screen. Considered as a “parcel” of some dimension, project onto this surface moving images and/or video of ephemeral and fleeting moments, dreamlike components that support the parcels nature as ephemeral.
OUTPUT
Apparatus & Sculptural Object | To Be Exhibited as installation or artifact.
Video | Documentation and sculptural component. TBE
Photography & Print | Documentation and Limited Purchase, TBE
