  • LAND | GROUND | ERRATIC(S)

Explores concepts of landmark, identification, and sensing of “erratics”; those significant leftovers from geologic history that present themselves as both useful and “problematic”. The objects of geologic history that call to many as legible objects, there to be read; obscure, obstacles capable of resolution.

  • Current developments of the erratic(s) project exist in material form as raw clay and fired ceramic boulder fields, with those significant “boulders” presenting themselves as oversized in relation to the contrasting surroundings; a quad of layered clay construction composed of the detritus from other projects.

These “boulders” as they are more commonly known, specifically to the climbing community, are sought after; often revered.  To geologists they are time keepers and storytellers; to cartographers they become registration points and valuable landmarks. To anyone who faces the challenge of navigating these lands, these objects present themselves and then become the ground for spatial imagination and sensing.

  • Project Duration | 30 Days + Post Production | 04.01.2026 - 05.01.2016 + P&E

Status | Ongoing | Partially Funded

  • INPUT(s)

    Primary Physical Materials

    • Stoneware Clay Detritus.

    Theoretical and Conceptual Foundations

    • Landscape Theory, Geology, Perception and Cognition of Landscape.

    SYSTEM (aka. Apparatus)

    Materials

    • Stoneware Clay Detritus, lumber, fabric, plastic, hardware

    Method

Use the conceptual foundation of imagined boulder fields as source to create a stratified clay surface; layer, form and finish with carefully positioned boulders and broadcast variety of varying grained dry clays.
